So often we, especially women, are bombarded with definitions of beauty. We are constantly told who we should look like by magazines, television, and the web. Even science has decided to join this discussion on beauty by dedicating itself to figuring out the exact formula behind sex appeal. With both media and science constantly chattering in my ear trying to tell me what makes someone aesthetically pleasing, meeting Farah Zulaikha was like hitting the reset button- she was exactly what I needed to help me better figure out my own beauty, and what it truly means to be beautiful.
"You must be Danielle! My publicist told me so much about you! We both love your blog, and she said you were the sweetest thing. I am so happy you're here!"
On Being A Fashion Ambassador...
I've always been a girls' girl. When I was younger I would look at magazines and think 'how come no one looks like me?'. I want girls to know that beauty isn't defined by just being one thing. You don't have to just have blond hair and blue eyes to be considered beautiful.
On Her Inspiration And The Launch of Her New Website...
Girls would always e-mail me asking me how I got my hair to be so shiny, or what I do for my skin, and I would tell them 'oh, my mom mixes these home-made remedies in our kitchen and we use it on our hair'. I would make some- I have a background in biochemistry- and send out samples. My followers were like Fafa is this really you e-mailing me? I would think of course it's really me!
Farah holds up the tinted lip balm in the shade Pink Champagne that everyone invited to the event went home with, and she is all smiles. I told her that I had recently met Maureen Kelly the founder of Tarte cosmetics, whose cosmetics I happened to be wearing, and is also known for her natural cosmetic line.
On Creating Natural Cosmetics...
Yes, I know Tarte! My lip tint, like Tarte cosmetics, is completely natural and I am really excited about it. From constantly using home remedies, it just felt natural to start to create an all-natural cosmetics. I am really excited about the lip tint because it was a shade designed to look great on every girl, and every skin tone.
As the night continued, Farah personally greeted each guest as they arrived, and we continued our conversation throughout the evening. One of the personality traits that Farah possesses, which I firmly believe is what draws people to her, is her compassion. At one point in the evening I had expressed that it was her philanthropy that I found so profound and beautiful. She replied by grabbing my hand and with a genuine seriousness stated, Yes, I strongly believe that charity is spreading love and beauty.
Farah is involved in so much, and is bettering the world in so many different ways. I love that Farah is well known not only for her ads and editorials as a model, but also as the face behind her humanitarian efforts. See some of her outstanding photographs below.
By the end of the night, I felt as if I had known Farah for years. Every guest was touched by her enthusiasm, and her ability to put into action the good she wants to see it the world. Beauty grows and spreads like wild fire through women like Farah, and that is the kind of beauty I wish we saw more of. She is humble, philanthropic, kind, intelligent, and friendly. It is because of all of this that Farah radiates beauty, a beauty that is not just visible to the naked eye, or measured by science, but a beauty that can be felt.
I cannot wait to see what Fafa has in store for her #fafanistas!

Give Back This Fall
Yesterday I received an e-mail from Megan O'Connor the Associate Director of Development for the Pencils of Promise non-profit. If you have been following my blog, then maybe you remember that I, along with Nicole P.D, attended their White Party hosted by Sophia Bush earlier in the year.
This is one of my favorite non-profits, because they are not only a great cause, but also extremely well organized.

We can all agree that giving is good right? Right! Well, Dusk & Rubies has been giving back and donating its time to non-profits, conservation funds, and start-up companies and projects that either inspire others, or aid others in finding success. We strongly believe that by doing your part you are not only helping others, but you are also paving the road for your own successful life. You get what you give!
Late last month my sister and I attended The Pencils Of Promise White Party which was a huge success. We were excited to not only donate, but also give our time. I also helped to spread the word about the P.O.P non-profit through the Dusk & Rubies blog, twitter account, and facebook page.
Dusk & Rubies was able to spread the word to over 1,000 people. So thank you to all of our viewers on all of our social media platforms. It is people like you, who take the time to give your time, which will help make our world a continuously better place.
Speaking of making the world a better place, I have been recently e-mailed about another opportunity to give. Of course I jumped at the chance, and I hope you do too! A friend of mine, Danielle Harley, had contacted me about the non-profit organization she is a part of called The Adventure Project.
The Adventure Project, as described by Danielle and the non-profit's website, is a new organization that aids those in developing countries by creating jobs. Becky Straw, and Jody Landers are the co-founders of this operation. Their vision? Is a world where poverty no longer exists, because they are "reinventing how we give". Think of it as a pay it forward type of program. If you visit their website, and we hope you do, then you can give back in four different ways. Your donation can go into creating jobs within the fields of: environment, health, hunger, and water maintenance for local wells. Their end goal is to make poverty extinct and their way of meeting that goal is to help create jobs, which will then help turn revenue, and profit in places that need an economic stimuli. Amazingly this non-profit has already created,"500 jobs benefiting 914,000 people".
How can you help? Well there is this new promotion going on right now! And I am super excited to bring it to you all. Summer, in NYC and the Hamptons, is one of the busiest times of the year for charity work, and non-profit organizations. And I have been trying to do my part and give back to organizations, dreams, and ideas that I believe in. I truly believe that many of us in our twenties want to contribute someway, somehow to the world we live in. Whether our interests lead us to contribute to the environment, and conservation societies, animal rehabilitation, ovarian cancer research, or education I think there are a lot of us who want to get involved and feel like we matter because we can make a difference.
I was so excited to learn about the non-profit P.O.P or better known as Pencils Of Promise. As a certified English teacher the cause really hit close to home. This extremely mindful organization believes that every young person has the natural right to education. They want to place a "pencil in every child's hand", realizing the immense impact our learned youth will have on our society one day. After watching their video, and reading more about their cause I knew without a doubt I wanted to contribute. (Watch the 1 minute video below for more information.)
Nicole, my sister and author of What You Need To Know, and I attended The Pencils of Promise White Party which was a ticketed event in the NYC hot club frequented by young professionals, Avenue. The venue was small and sophisticated, and everyone was expected to wear white. Not only was the party a huge success due to generous donations, but also the ticket cost, and any contribution made up to $1,200 was matched 100%.
And, If that wasn't enough. The non-profit brought it big time celebrity Sophia Bush to host. (I am a big fan of One Tree Hill), and was open bar from 8-11 and passed hor d'oeuvres from 8:30-10:30.
Everyone I met was extremely kind, caring, and excited about the reason we were all in the same room. We all banned together, wore white, took pictures with giant pencils, danced, and drank champagne as we donated towards the building of a new school. The best parties always have a cause.
What was even more amazing? (I know you can't even begin to imagine.) Everyone was excited to pose for Dusk & Rubies' blog. So thank you to everyone who is featured in this post. (I will be e-mailing those who gave me their e-mails copies of their final pictures!)
Okay so on to the fashion! What do you wear to a white party, or any major event in NYC? Well let me break it down for you as you take a gander at the best dressed of the night!
