When I feel like taking a last minute mini-vacation, and I need someplace that is affordable, stress free and only an hour away I love taking a ferry over to Shelter Island. If you are not familiar with Long Island than you're probably not familiar with the amazing smaller islands just off the coast. While some of the islands are land preserves, and private properties like Gardiners Island, Great Gull and Little Gull Islands, Plum Island and Robins Island, there are many that you can visit and explore such as Fire Island, Block Island and Shelter Island. When I was younger, I loved Fire Island. But now that I'm a bit older, I prefer the serenity of the beaches of West Hampton and the privacy of small town living on Shelter Island.
Keep reading to learn some of the perks, and to view some of the amazing landscapes when visiting Shelter Island.
Perk #1: The cost of the walk on ferry is by far the best deal in America, $2 one way, $4 round trip ferry ticket. Want to bring your bike? $3, Same day return (you and your bike) $5. Best part, it doesn't matter how much luggage you have. Compared to Davis Park, a beach on Fire island whose round trip ferry price is $17--and that's not including your luggage, crates, large coolers etc. I would say Shelter Island ferry is a steal!
Perk #2: If you take the North Ferry you are a 5-10 minute walk from town and about a 20 minute walk from Eagle Deli, which is open 7 days a week all year long.
Perk #3: Eagle Deli has the best sandwiches for only $9.75 perfect to bring to the beach! Located at 25 West Neck Road, it is a 5 minute walk from Crescent Beach.
Perk #4: Harbor views of beautiful sailboats and beautiful cars are everywhere you turn!
Perk #5: Sunset Beach Hotel is definitely the most expensive stay on the island, but you can still enjoy Crescent Beach, the Sunset Beach Restaurant and the Andre Balazs Reserve Rose without the stay. Oh, and let's not forget a beach front massage! C'est chic.
Perk #6: The sunsets can be viewed from every spot on Shelter Island and they are spectacular. Watch them with family, friends, significant other or pet to rejuvenate before you head back to work next week.
