Give Back This Fall

Yesterday I received an e-mail from Megan O'Connor the Associate Director of Development for the Pencils of Promise non-profit. If you have been following my blog, then maybe you remember that I, along with Nicole P.D, attended their White Party hosted by Sophia Bush earlier in the year.

This is one of my favorite non-profits, because they are not only a great cause, but also extremely well organized.

Here are the details:

It starts at 8pm at Marquee and tickets are still available here.
Be sure to get yours if you haven't yet and invite your friends!
Tickets will not be sold at the door.

When it comes to fall accessories "chunky" is a word that has positive connotations. We want chunky chains that layer nicely over our knits, and crew neck long sleeves from J. Crew. (Ah fall...I am getting excited just thinking about the boots alone) Enjoy :)

All you need to remember is the phrase:

Award Winning New England Clam Chowder

The view...oh la la
Claudio's Restaurant is one of those places that is built upon history, family traditions, secret recipes, and even hidden passageways that were once used during prohibition times. Needless to say, I am a repeat customer. Brian and I were seated in the perfect corner where we both had tons of room to stretch out, and languidly watch the day stretch out over the harbor.
The food...
It's all good! I have tried so many choices off of their menu, but most recently I ordered the:
1870 Steak Salad Grilled sliced New York strip steak, crisp iceberg lettuce, steakhouse bleu cheese dressing and halved grape tomatoes

Which I am going to strongly recommend, because this is not your average bleu cheese people! If you are a lover of cheese, let me tell you this bleu cheese is an experience. It is separate from the dressing itself. It is smooth, and buttery, and just the right amount of saltiness. It is perfection...and only made more perfect by being paired with my goblet of pinot noir.

The wine...

While waiting for our table, Brian and I sat at the bar and I was adamant about treating myself to the perfect glass. The bartender was an extremely knowledgeable and helpful guide while I ventured on my quest. He let me taste (poured freely) the following:

The La Linda Malbec's tannins left more of a sharp aftertaste, and the Chianti was too sweet for me. But the Hob Nob Pinot Noir's was perfect with my dinner, and really complimented the london broil, and bleu cheese well.

This place has the magic three: atmosphere, delectable dishes, and winning wine lists. So if that doesn't persuade you, then I will leave you with this fun fact, In 2012 Claudio's celebrated its 142nd Anniversary, and in turn was recognized by The National Restaurant Association as The Oldest Same Family Run Restaurant In The United States. That is pretty amazing, and further proof that if you haven't dined here yet, you should!

In life, I like it when I have all my yachts in a row. You may think the saying is "get your ducks in a row", and you may think that I am somehow mixing my idioms, but no you read correctly. I made no mistake; I like it when my yachts are all in a row.

What use do I have with ducks anyway?

This past weekend Brian and I went to Greenport for their Annual Maritime Festival. Visually speaking it was gorgeous and I had to snap a few photos:

One of the great perks of living on Long Island is weekends like these, with outstanding views of sails and sky. Brian, and I also had dinner at the famed Claudio's Restaurant which topped off the night. Stay tuned for D&R's Foodie Review!

After seeing these photos don't you too want your yachts in a row?

One step inside Queen City Cupcakes, and you'll think you have died and gone to pinterest heaven. You won't be able to resist snapping a few photos with your smartphone. I know I couldn't, as you'll play witness to my lack of restraint below.

While it's name, Queen City Cupcakes, may be deceiving, those of you who love a little indulgence will be pleasantly surprised that you can indulge in not only cupcakes, but also hot sellers like Carol's (the shop's owner) specialty vegan bars. And, if you're looking for a treat that's just a sweet, but not as sugary then you're also in the right place. Carol has her specialty shop set up to perfection, so that everyone who wanders in from Main Street will be greeted with an eyeful of enchantment.

One of my favorite pieces from the Dusk & Rubies
"How Country Feels"
Fall Collection 2013

There's Dusk & Rubies' Necklace and Earrings on Display!

Outdoor seating perfect for gabbing with girlfriends over coffee.

There is even more to see and taste, so come on down and meet Carol, the shop's owner and curator who is lovely and beyond friendly! Order a coffee and peruse the store at your leisure, maybe even snap a few photos. I can't imagine a better way to unwind after a long day of work...
...except for adding a turtle cupcake to your order. It might make it a smidge better...just a smidge.

Am I in Satorini? No? Just Checking.

You had me at hello…

That is if your hello was a warm bread basket, peppered with fresh herbs, and brushed just the way we like it with a heavenly stroke of olive oil (dramatic pause) then, that bread basket decided to make it a two-way with some homemade hummus…

And this was just the foreplay.

Visit Greece by way of Midtown East…

Ethos Gallery on 51st, a Greek restaurant which pays special attention to creating the freshest Mediterranean menu, does just about everything right- if you’re into that sort of thing. From the moment you sit down under their whitewashed wood beams, and high ceilings, and onto your choice of a beach couch or booth you’ll be asking the nearest waiter if you just sat down in an estiatório (restaurant), on a cliff, overlooking the Aegean sea, in Santorini.

Yes, they’re that good.

They’re just so full of compliments…

Not only are the ingredients fresh, colorful, and the wine list extensive, but also at the end of every meal a dessert plate is placed in the center of your table to share. And it’s complimentary! There is the sokalata, the baklava, and the galaktosuriko. Even if you can’t pronounce them, you’ll salivate at the sight of them.

Ambiance? Check.

Delicious Dishes? Check.

Free stuff? Check.

See how we styled some pieces from the "How Country Feels" Collection below:

"Country-up" one of your summer dresses by:
-Pairing it with your best cowboy boots,
-Adding a thin hoodie for an instant layered look,
-And finally, an on trend denim piece over the hoodie.

You will not only be ready for fall, but also the most stylish girl at the rodeo. Maybe even TSwift will cast you in one of her music videos about one of her latest breakups; they seem to be never-ending...and catchy.

You may think that Long Island is only a summer destination, because of our beautiful beaches, haute Hampton's shopping, funk music festivals, and iconic venues like Nikon at Jones Beach Theater. And even though summer's on Long Island are what I dream about in the spring, my favorite time of year on Long Island is actually the Fall! There is so much to do, to see, and towns to visit. One of my favorite towns to wander around, on a crisp but comfortable fall Saturday, is Greenport. Here, let me show you why:

1. Picturesque Impromptu Stops:

On your way out to the North Fork town of Greenport you'll pass beautiful fields, farm stands, tea cottages, and my favorite... yard sales. There is always cars pulled over to the side of the road to pick their own fresh produce, apples, pumpkins or to play in the corn maze, or taste a homemade apple pie mmm. And let's not forget there are vineyards, after vineyards, after vineyards. Getting to Greenport is half the fun!

2. Tall Ships Festival

This is one of my favorite fall festivals, and it is happening this weekend September 20th-22nd! There are beautiful ships that you can tour, chowder contests, live music, parades, street venders, blacksmith workshops, beer tasting, and more! Speaking of beverages...

3. The Greenport Brewery

Tastings are free, and flights are $8. Plus, they throw in a free pint glass as a souvenir! Relax in their tasting room that duels as an art exhibit. The exhibit they're hosting right now is based on Moby Dick, which is fitting because Greenport was a huge whaling town during the early 1800s.

So, if you're free this weekend and you live on Long Island, then start up your fall festivities and take a deserved day trip, and if you're not from Long Island and free turn your weekend into a little vaca, and check out the festival schedule here:

Hey Lovelies! It's a new season, and that means it is time to move on to some new books. But wait, not so fast. We still have to recap which books were a great summer read. Here are a few more mentionable titles I read over the summer:

1. ASTOR PLACE VINTAGE By STEPHANIE LEHMANN

As stylish and sophisticated as its cover, this novel will wow and surprise those who are interested in both New York City's: history, architecture, and design. I learned so much from this novel about our great and enchanting city, as well as fell in love with the books characters.

Buy it here.

2. THE WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING By BETH KENDRICK

Funny enough, I read this novel the week before a wedding I was attending. Even more peculiar the main characters had some of the same names as people in the wedding party! This novel was a fun, easy read that really understands the dynamics of family, the distress of having too much family all in one place, and what true love really is. (Plus, you're going to fall for the hunk...and you're not going to want to!)

Buy it here.

3. THERE'S CAKE IN MY FUTURE By KIM GRUENENFELDER

Amazing how the entire lives of three women end up revolving around a cake pull. What's a cake pull you ask? Well, a cake pull is the tradition where you attach small charms to ribbon, and place them inside a cake. This cake is usually served at bridal showers, and each woman attending has the chance to pull on a ribbon and find a charm. These charms are supposed to be telling of your future! Dangerous, and possibly life-threatening? Yes. Completely hilarious to watch unfold? That would be a yes too!

You can buy it here.

4. MR. MAYBE By JANE GREEN

Now, I usually discourage people from judging a book by its cover, but if you were, now would be the time to start. Jane Green is a fantastic British writer who knows how to navigate her readers through the real people in real relationships that she creates on every page. I think a lot of women would feel they shared a common bond with her main character Libby Mason; I know I did!

Buy it here.

5. JEMIMA J By JANE GREEN

Another novel written by the talented Jane Green is about a woman who goes through a major evolution in her life. If you're a fan of those makeover segments on any day time show, or magazine. This transformation is going to rock your world! You'll be saying, "And I thought Anne Hathaway's Devil Wears Prada transformation was amazing". We can all learn a lot about self-love, body image, and self respect through Jemima J, and she'll make you laugh out loud along the way.

Buy it here.

So that sadly ends my Summer Book Club chapter, and I do have a few overdue library dues to pay. But with a new season, comes a new handbag, new boots, and some new hot reads!

Have a hot read you're just dying to discuss? E-mail us or message us on facebook, and we'll start up the conversation!
